Journal Entry – Lake Superior – Day 8

After I got up this morning, I tried to figure my day. Should I stay here and take in the beautiful leaves and hike in Porcupine State park, or should I travel to Medford, Wisconsin. As the sun was coming out from behind the clouds, I decided to stay here, and I am glad that I did, since the leaves and weather was perfect.

After lunch, I drove to Lake of the Clouds in the state park. With this lake being between the first two escarpments from Lake Superior, it is nicely set between the two ridges of the escarpments. The road comes, including the parking lot, on the east end of the lake. By standing then on the top of the note escarpment, there is a great view in to the lake probably 150 feet below. With the view today, with the sun shining and the tress in color, I made the correct decision to stay here for the day.

Looking down from the top of the escarpment ridges, with the amount of color that there is below, it is one powerful feeling, as best that I can describe the color. It is Mother Nature pushing back with all of the color that nature can through at us. Although it was windy and hazy, it did not diminish the feelings. Regarding the clouds, I could not help but wonder if they were formed by jet condition trails; therefore, they would have been a good way to not make my photos look Mother Nature.

From the visitor viewing area, I proceed west along the escarpment. Although the trail is well used, it is a roughed trail walking on root and rocks, and that is not to mention going up and down the grades. My elevation grade was 911 feet, and the length was 1.85 miles one way. Considering about a month ago, I was hiking on some strenuous trials I got my heart beating about 150 beats per minutes; therefore, regarding today’s actives, I took it slow going up the grades and watch my heart rate. My heart rate got up to 102 beats per minute and it is now at 60 beats per minute, so I survived my hike today. I am sure looking forward to the ablation next Friday, so I do not have to worry about how fast my heart is beating.

Since I did get exhausted during my hike, I did set and watch the world go by. I have always felt that is was better to be setting there watch Mother Nature’s power instead of sitting a deck. It is a great feeling just setting there and watch and hearing Mother Nature. As for today, I was there sitting by myself, since there was very few hikers on the trail. After I get back to the visitor’s viewing area, I cannot help but wonder what would happen it most of the people there would try the trail that I accomplished today. Even regarding people of my age, how many would make it? I can just state that it nice to have good health, even though my heart wants to beat fast from time to time, and physical able to hike on roughed trails. I guess that my walking three mile per day makes a difference.

Here in Ontonagan, the sunset have been spectacular, except for this evening. It would be a privilege to live here just to see the sunsets. Last Wednesday, when I when hiking on the shore the water was still warn, but now it has cooled off in lest then a week, as Mother Nature shows just how fast the weather can change.

As for tomorrow, it is back to Wisconsin and the Central Time Zone, and I know that I am going to miss the sunset being an hour latter. Now we are in something that man can control: the time zones. Such is life.
