Journal Entry – Lake Superior Trip – Day 4

This morning was overcast, but late in the morning I toured Fort Wilkins, since I am camped campground. The fort was built in 1844. After purchasing the land up here from the Indians and finding copper, the fort was build to maintain peace, although the Indians were to move off of the land. Without much civil unrest, the fort was not need. Although there was a few years with only a sergeant managing the fort, the fort was repopulated during the civil war, and closed after the civil war. It became a stated park in 1923. Since then, the stated of Michigan had restored the fort, and it is in good repair today. Nice to have restored history so that, hopefully, bad history does not repeat itself.

The sun came out this afternoon, and I had a nice 2.5 mile hike along the shore of Lake Superior. The hiking was not easy walking on roots and rocks, but my. hiking books with thick sole made the hiking easy. I really got some nice photos of the rock shore with fall colors.

I am enjoying the long evenings up here on the western since of the Eastern Timezone. However, with the sun coming up around 8:00 in the morning is a little different. So far, I have been sleeping later in the morning and finding it hard to fall asleep at my normal bedtime. This is a good example of what a year long daylight savings time would look like.

I am noticing that my furnace is not coming on like it should, since it has not been working correctly today. I have been able to get it going by turning the furnace off and on at the thermostat. This is not a good time to have issues with the furnace, since I am not planing on being back in Whitewater until Thursday. At least the temperatures are moderated that this time of the year. I will let you know how it goes in tomorrow’s journal entry.
