The Framers call the United States government a Republic. The strong body of the US government. The word Republic comes from the Roman Senate that was that gave them a strong government during the Roman regime. The members are appointed by an entity and are not selected by popular vote, and they are to view the laws that come to vote without public pressure. After Benjamin Franklin made the motion for the Constitution to be signed with the motion passing and the Constitution signed on September 17, 1787, Elisabeth Willing Powel him a question: Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” His answered was, “a republic, if we can keep it.” With the ramifications of Amendment 17, where US Senators are voted in my the general public instead of appointed by the states, our government is no longer a republic. With the Framers warning that a democracy takes a path of its own, this country will not be a republic until Amendment 17 is repealed. Therefore, with today’s government, it is permanently defected until the states resume appointing senators.
Before the Framers started drafting the US Constitution, they had plenty of historical governments to review, with most of the governments failing. By when it came to almost successful governments, they did look closely at the Roman government. In particularly, they reviewed the Roman senate very closely, considering the success of this type of republic government. Candidates had to meet qualifications, such as provident people in the community. Then they were selected through the office of Censor, including the king and other provident people. The point here is that the senators were appointed and not voted into office by the general public. This made Roman government into a republic.
As with the Roman government, the Framers became forced on the US Senate for the US Constitution. The were looking the stability of the senators to be selected by the states. The House of Representatives was to feel the pulse of the people. The excessive branch started out with the president being selected by the senators but later changed to being voted into office by the people, so the president could feel the pulse of the people. The US Supreme Court was always going to be selected by the president and ratified by the senate. Therefore, the framers saw the senate as their primary focus for the republic government.
The framers were looking for provident people to serve as senators. Although they were looking at the House of Lords in England, theirs and our aristocratic government worked rather well at the time. There was provident people like plantation owners, bankers, entrepreneurs, college administrative educators, and farmers that would fit the image that they were looking for at the time. As for today, the provident people would include people that are independently wealthy; bankers, college administrators; entrepreneurs; health administrators and doctors, philanthropist; sports administrators and professionals; agriculture administrators and farmers; astronauts and the list goes on forever. provident people today with an interest in government would be like John Glenn and/or Elon Musk. With the aristocratic government gone in this country, it does change the whole focus on the selection of senators.
After the civil war, the senate had absent members. Provident people were become difficult to find that would serve in the senate. And, if the states found someone to serve in the senate, they were often absent. With government coming together after the civil war, it could be expected that provident people in the south may not have been interested in the national government. Furthermore, without any urgency in the government from critical issues, it might have been hard to find people draw to the national government. As for there being absent members in the senate, it could be argued that the House of Lords has an absentee rate. The absentee rate probably did not fall on the fact that the members were not interested, as in the House of Lords, but that they found other items more important than the US government at the time. However, as with the British Lords, senators will be on the floor of the senate when there vote is needed.
It can be argued that the US government and state administrator did not understand what they were removing from the government when they drafted Amendment 17, since they removed the stability in the government that the framers were writing into the constitution. he framers understand that a democracy can take on a life of its own without any stability in the government at all.
To repeal Amendment 17 in today’s political environment seems almost impossible. We hear everyday that the conservatives are concern with the instability of our government, and it seems like they would take on a process to repeal Amendment 17. However, when observing the democrats, it seems like it would be impossible for them to bring stability to the government. As it was the presidential campaign of President BO, how does an opponent run against a campaign run on word: “hope.”
By using the ambivalent word “hope,” the campaign could, and did, that on a direction of it own. There was no campaign issues that an opponent could speak for or against. This ambivalent movement that we saw in President BO’s campaign is the same type of movement that we see in the US government by the democrats. Furthermore, as it been observed by the Democrats, they gain political power and millions of dollars worth of income serving as president or in congress. They make more money. than the conservative serving the same time period. With the Democrats gaining so much power and becoming multi millionaire, they would have no interest in repealing Amendment 17.
The Framers vision of a stable government has been permanently deflected with Amendment 17, as we now live through the instability in our day to day lives. Benjamin Franklin statement “a republic, if we can keep” to Elizabeth Willing Powel after the closing of the constitutional convention was probably the best advice given to support the US government. As we look back on Amendment 17 in today’s society, it was wrong that is amendment was ever ratified, since it has left instability not just in the USA, but the world, with the world is influenced by the US government.
