Journal Entry – Scotland Day Eight

It was a nice – mostly sunny day today with a high of 50 degrees. I got to Balmoral Castle at 12:00 day and went to the restaurant for lunch on the castle grounds. I again tried the venison burger. Although I believe that the meat did not have anything mixed into it like it did last night, it was toped with extras to the point that I could not taste the meat. This is why I do not usually order hamburgers at home, for some reason every restaurant wants to cover up the taste with extras. Toped with a little catchup, dill pickles or sauerkraut works just fine for me. Why is it wrong to taste the beef? I do not understand; I like the taste of beef.

It was unbelievable, but we had access to the entire grounds around the castle, including all of the flower gardens. It is too early in the year for most of the flowers to be in full bloom. The flower gardens are a challenge here, with a short growing season and less rain than they receive on the west side of Scotland. King Charles III has been hard at work trying to expand the gardens, and I believe that it will be an addition to the castle in years to come. With King Charles III staying in a big house near by, it is stated that he wants to be closer to Mother Nature than the stiff walls of the castles.

For the age of the castle, it is in good condition, and I would expect that the inside is also in good condition, since we were able to see the inside of the ballroom that is remarkable small, although Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had it built. Today they were setting up scaffolding on the southeast side of the castle, although it is a little different to know what they were repairing from the ground.

On this southeast side of the castle is the location of the sunken gardens. (With the lack of rain, they must not flood.). On this side of the castle is that Queen Elisabeth lived in so that she could see the gardens and the best country view from the Castle to the southeast.

Queen Victoria and Albert purchased the castle and then they expanded to Castle to have more living space. I really do not understand that term castle, since this castle does not seem to be built to keep the unfriendly clans ways. However, it is clear that this is a cherished get away for the Royals during the month of April. The castle is only open to the public from April to July.

I was able to get some great photos today with the sun shining on the castle. At the end of my tour around the castle, there is a trail that goes up into the hills with a great view of the castle, so I took the extra time to hike up the hill that was over a mile hike, but he view was great with the sun shining on the castle. More great photos.

Once again, I had an issue with the bus app. To get back from the castle, I was watching the app for the best time to return and have time to relax before supper, but I read the bus schedule to the west instead of the schedule to the east. I only had to wait another 50 minutes for the east bound bus. Next time I am here I am renting a car, and I will learn to drive on the wrong side of the highway.

For supper to night, I had slow cooked ox cheek. As for us, to would have been slow cooked beef roast. The cattle he are grass feed, so the meat is dense and it just falls apart with a fork. It was very good.

Tomorrow is my last day here, and I feel that it is going to be sad to leave, since there is so many fund and interesting things to do here. I am planning on walking down town and renting a bike to see the area, so I will have to see how things are going.
