Journal Entry – US Air Force Band

What an evening? Can anyone believe that the US Air Force Band was playing in the preforming arts building on the UW-W campus on Veterans Day? Strictly unbelievable. By observing the talent of these airmen and noncommissioned officers (NCOS), any third world country would know that they do not stand a chance against our military.

There were three First Class Airmen, and the rest was Technical Sergeants and above. There was two Master Sergeants there. One of the Technical Sergeants had earned his musical major from the UW-W. This is with in the emphasis on all Air Force personnel to obtain their advanced degrees. Most NCOS have their bachelors degrees and higher degrees. The officers are also encouraged to get there advanced degrees. It is like what my flight instructor stated when I was in officer’s training: do you know how we are going to win the next war? We, as students, looked perplexed. She went on to state that we will have the best trained military in the world, and, if the military can function without political influences, this is the goal of the military, especially the Air Force.

Most of the songs they stated a classics, but I did not recognize them, but I enjoyed the tenant of the enlisted personnel. They really put their heart into their music, and they were from Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

They had a female singer, retired Technical Sergeant Joyce, and she was great, with not only a great voice, but an extremely high range in her voice. In concert, I cannot remember any woman have a voice like her’s, except for Shirley Jones. I mean Shirley Jones has a voice that can fill a colosseum without amplification, and I believe that this woman could too. I am not sure that Shirley would be willing to sing like that at the age of 90.

When she sang the Battle hymn of the Republic, it was like she was singing about the election last week.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
His truth is marching on

The song was written 1861, just before the Civil War. It might have meant the Abraham Lincoln was holding the sword, but I also have heard that it was George Washington that was holding the sword. But, for what happened last Tuesday, let’s assume that George Washington was holding the swift sword. He used the sword to cut down the political liars to save the Union, and I could feel this when she was singing. As for some of the political people today that want to abandon the colonel government, they have lost sight of the genius that these Founding Fathers put into the US Constitution. It is like them talk about the Founding Fathers as being slave owners without read about the ones that did, and did not, own slaves and the perspective that they had regarding slavery, like George Washington freeing his slaves after Martha died.

Although I only served the Air Force for a short time, it was a great experience for me. Some of the training I still use today. It gives me great pride to serve in the Air Force, and to serve my country. I did find it interesting to see the number of veterans in the crowd tonight, since the city of Whitewater has not been able to retain veterans. But, with this being Veterans Day, many of them came a distance to get here tonight.
