State of the Union – Framers Prediction

From the comments from the Framers as they drafted to our Constitution, they did predict the poor behavior used by some of US Senators during the recent State of Union address, and this is why they wrote the Constitution with the US Senators being appointed by the state legislatures. It should be stated that the Framers saw our government as a republic and not a democracy as some of the politicians now call it.

According to the Framers, the house of representatives were to feel the pulse of the people of the USA. The Framers only wanted one entity of our government feel the pulse of the people, with this allowing any representative to bring unpopular items to the table for a bill, much as we see today. The senators were not to feel the pulse of the people, since they were to focus on the sensibility of each of the bills coming through congress. With the senator reporting directly to the state legislatures. they were not to feel the pressure from the people as the bills pasted through congress. As the Framers predicted, if senators were elected by the people then there would chaos to the government, as we have seen everyday. .

The Seventeenth Amendment changed the selection of the senators to be selected by popular vote was ratified on April 8, 1913. The states of Louisiana and Utah later ratified the amendment. It was stated that the states could not find provident people serve in the senate that leading to the senate having vacant seats during sessions. The Framers did recognize that the senate would be similar to the British House of Lords, and they would have recognized that there were vacant seats during House of Lords sessions. However, with some of the membership being passed down from family member to family members, some of these family members would not have any interest in politics. It can be said that those that are interested in politics and those that have bills that have an impact on their well being are in attendance. As for the US Senate, the Framers was looking for provident people serve, like business people to serve in this type of situation. If one looks at the provident people today, it might be hard to pick out candidates. However, candidates might include John Glenn and Elon Musk. Provident people that have an interest in politics. As far as the state legislatures finding provident people today, it seems like this might not be a problem, considering the stated of our politics today. Also, as far as the one that are interested today in politics and do not want to put of with the grief of elections, they would fit right in to the senate.

The fighting, the bickering, the childish behavior was all produced that concerned the Framers. Now that things have changed in the US politics, one has the ask the question if the Seventeen Amendment could be appealed. Although it could be appealed, it seems like it would never make it out of the senate, when considering the power that each of the senators hold at this time. The Framers were looked at senators having powerful positions, but not the power that they have today. There thoughts were that they would spend most of their time, as with the British Lords, in their offices muling over each of the bills to fit the needs for their state and country. There was not to be the bad behavior from the senators that we are seeing today.

The Framers saw the Constitution as a republic. Just as the name of the senate, coming from the Roman government, the members are appointed. The Framers knew that democracies fail, since the population will force the country to going in unhealthy directions in the government, To keep this country from going in unhealthy directions, the Framers included the senate. At points in the drafting of the Constitution, there was discussion on the president being selected by congress. However, to feel the pulse of the people, it was determined that the president should be elected by the Electoral College, but there form of the Electoral College does not look like the college of today., with the obvious change being that each state votes for the president with the most popular votes. The Electoral College was to be a concession of the people from the states party less conventions, and not a popular vote. If you listen closely to the Democrats, they refer to our government as a democracy, since they are looking of individual power for themselves that can be observed by reviewing their income.

When looking at the US Constitution that the Framers drafted and was ratified on June 21, 1788, it becomes an incredible document. They saw through so many details that politicians and citizens struggle with today. As for the Seventeenth Amendment is concerned, the Framers were correct that it should have never been ratified, since we would not have the issues in our government that we have today. As a parting thought, the Framers were came from a population of 3.9 million people which means that people of that day were dedicated to politics. With today’s population of 380 million people, it could be stated that a constitution would not be written.
