Journal Entry – First Day – Snowbird

Although this is not popular with me, I am becoming a snowbird this year. I find it sad, since I enjoy all four seasons, except for muddy April. Without my new home being built, I am heading south. Or, at least far enough south where I can feel comfortable in my trailer. When the temperature get below 40 degrees, it is hard to keep the chill out of the air in the travel trailer.

It looked like a nice day for traveling at Whitewater this morning, with a partly cloudy day and no winds. I left dad’s place just before 10:00 and headed south on US 89. After driving around Belvedere, I headed south on I 39, but I soon fund a 12 mph wind out of the east with gust. The joy of driving on a highway with calm winds turned into a drive of concentration. Not only was I dealing with wind gusts but the semis would block the wind as they can around me causing some sway of the trailer. In this situation, I felt like 60 mph was comfortable, but this increased the number of semis coming around, with the speed limit being 70 mph. I just put new truck tires on my truck that are inflated to 38 psi, and these new truck tires were helping control the sway. So, the sway was tailorable. I do feel that these new truck tires are making a difference from the tires that I had on the truck before, since they probably have a stronger side walls to control the sway.

By 3:00, I got to Bloomington-Normal, and I decided to look for campground. Since I had looked at campground on the web yesterday, I had an idea of the location of stated campgrounds, and, yes, the state campgrounds are still open. About 15 miles east of Bloomington, there is Moraine View State Recreation Area. With my geology background, I was hoping that they had information on the glaciers, but there is none to found, Although I had a pick of my camp site, I pick one that has a view of the lake. After I got the trailer set up, I got my 30 minute hike in just before dark. But, as the sun was going down, there was a beautiful sun set with the red light shining on the lake. It was worth the trip.

A mile before the campground, I had four bars of reception from the cell towers; but, when I got to my camp site, there was only one bar of reception, and I did not know if I was going to be able to type tonight, but the one bar of reception is giving me the opportunity the type to night.

I am going to plan to make it to the Ohio River tomorrow. Fort Massac was built in 1802, and there is now a replica of the fort there, so I feel that it the fort in while I am here. I will tell you more about it tomorrow.
