Journal Entry

I am still up here at Point Beach State Forest nest to Lake Michigan north of Manitowoc. It was a nice sunny day with the high temperature at 66 degrees. How I hate to go back to Whitewater and the 80 degrees, since it is too late to get into the 90s.

I stated this morning by walking the sandy beach, and that was fun. Feeling each of the nerves getting stimulate in my feet feels good, so this seems to be a healthy exercise. When we have shoes on, and we have to in our environment, each nerve does on get simulated, since the shoes are spreading the resistance from the soil over many nerves as we walk. So going bare foot in the house is good, but walking on the carpet is better. Just like our ancestor did before there was shoes.

This afternoon I when into Manitowoc to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and museum is here because 28 submarines were constructed here in World War II. Four of these subs went down during the war with their crews. The USS Cobia is moored along side of the museum. I was really surprised on how technical the ships is for the time that it was constructed with slide rules. There are four huge diesel generators on the ship that probably could power the city of Manitowoc today, since they put out that much power. The second item that I thought was interesting is that this is the first time that I have been on a submarine after watching countless WWII movies. The offices, crew areas, dining area, engine rooms, and torpedo rooms made sense. But, what I thought that was most interesting, was the deck. There is a shell that is the submarine, but there is a superstructure above the shell that is the deck. I kind have seen this in the movies, but it is so different seeing it in person. This is an out standing museum with great displays of shipping in on Lake Michigan, including the ship wrecks in the bottom of the lakes. So, if any one is up here, this would be a museum to see.

As a side note, with my structure engineering background, the Manitowoc Cranes are built in the same location as the submarine were built. The Manitowoc Cranes are some of the best cranes built in the world. It stand as a testament to the Manitowoc area. Ships have been built here forever, as documented in the museum today. When the Navy called on to have submarines constructed at the start of WWII, the Navy granted the company 10 subs to be built, but after the Navy seen the quantity of the subs coming out of here, they ended up building 28 subs. Just like the complicated cranes that are being constructed here now.

I am sure that most people have noticed the full moon, even if they have had a hard time sleeping. Some time after sunset, with a wind blowing across the lake, I took a few photos of the moon with the wind blowing the sand one the beach. Although the moon was quite aways in the sky, there was enough moon reflection to take great pictures. To enhance the photos, I took the photos with my iPhone Pro and it is programmed to take these low light photos and make them into great photos, something that I could not do with my SLR.

As I have referred to above, tomorrow it is back to Whitewater for a few days and then on Sunday I am off for Rochester, Minnesota, but not before I get another walk in the beach in the morning. There is more for me to do here, like hike on the Ice Age Trail, so I will just have to come back.
