Greetings from Whittington, Illinois. Since I am tried of brown grass and black mud and no winter sports, I have decide to move south. So, yesterday, I drove 350 miles south to Mt Vernon, Illinois. It was a long day of driving and there was a moderate wind blowing. Even with the moderate wind out of the south, my truck engine turned over at over 2,000 rpms with a gas milage of 9, when the gas milage is 22 mpg without pulling the trailer. Since it was 7:00 when I got to Mt Vernon, I rented a hotel room. It was the right thing to do, since it was dark when I get here and my trailer has not been un-winterized. But the weather for today should the wind blowing hard. And, with my high profile trailer, it is not fun to drive in a high wind.
So, this morning, the wind was starting to blow, I stropped at Walmart and pick up a few supplies and then I traveled eighteen miles to a campground next to the interstate across from Rend Lake. As high as the wind was blowing, the eighteen miles were as long as I wanted to spend driving in the wind. This afternoon the wind was gusting at over 30 mph, and the temperature got up to 77 degrees. A close friend of mine stated that I should drive safely; therefore, as for today, it meant parking the trailer and letting the wind blow, but not blowing my trailer all over the interstate.
As for me, the stop was good for me, since I was able to get my trailer ready for the warmer weather. I am assuming that the weather will be moderate as I continue to travel south. As for now, I am planning on continuing to traveling south all the way to the Mississippi River. Since I have been to the source of the Mississippi River many times, and will probable continue, it seems like it is time to see the delta. Of course there is the high number of days that I worked on the Mississippi River bridges in Iowa, including the Missouri and intra state bridges.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is again high winds, so I have my space here for another day. Since I am here, I will take in Rend Lake and do a little hiking. The forecast for Tuesday is rain and no wind, so I should be able to travel to Memphis without any problems.
Since I am retired, there is no set time for me to be back in southern Wisconsin. Therefore, from this point on, it is one day at a time.
