Journal Entry – Lake Superior Circle

I saw that it was 91 degrees at home today, but it was a pleasant 68 degrees up here today.

I made it kind of a quiet day here today. I found a few trials to hike on, but nothing to get exited about. I made it down in the city of Schneider and this is a large railroad yard and one of the main railroad lines between the east and west across Canada. If one thought that the grades were steep on the highways, think about the only minor grades for the railroad tracks. This was a monumental task on the north side of the Lake. And, to the east, it was constructed before there was a highway. I mean that it is all granite in this area, and not what might be called a soft rock, but an igneous rock. A rock from lava. Although I saw a video today on the railroad, it did not come close to talking about all of the rock cuts and fills.

There was one interesting aspect of the area around the city of Schneider during World War Two. This area was a Japanese prison camp for two years. What a great place for a prisoner camp, since there would have been almost no way that they could have excepted during that time period, unless they walked down the railroad tracks. It surely would not have taken much to guard the prisoners during a time of war when the troops were needed elsewhere.

As expected, I am finding Lake Superior very majestic. I have always stated that the north shore drive in Minnesota is the most beautiful location in the mid west. It is the ingenious rocks, the dark blue water and the tough trees growing out of the hard racks where one would only think that no trees could grow from. Here in this area of the Lake, there is pink granite.

The beaches are kind of interesting. For thousands of years, the waves have crashed on to the shores. The rocks range from sand, pebbles, to racks. On the south east side side of the lake, there are huge sand shores, with some being the highest in the world. A great place to walk the beach barefoot. Here on the north side, the beach are segregated by the size of the pebbles and rock based on the height of the lake water. The there are locations where the waves crack into the rock, like the Bay Field caves. This is one enjoyable Lake.

I am still in the same location tomorrow. Although it is a short walk to the beach, I can here the highway traffic all the time. So, in the future, I will need to get my campground reservation in earlier and select campground that are not close the highways.
