Journal Entry

The last couple of days have been really nice with the temperates in the mid 70s. But we had about four inches of rain over the weekend and into Monday.

With all of the rain that came down, and it seemed like it would not end, there have been flood warnings. Yesterday, I found the Bark River out of its bank, but not the Rock River. Things are so different here, since there is a low velocity of the water in the rivers. Some the river bank along the Rock River are lined with loosely fitting rocks and there are boat docks. If this was Iowa, I would have been out checking some of the bridges and culverts for erosion, with the high water velocities Since I am living in a glaciered area, the water does not flow in the rivers, since the river bottoms do not have much of a grade. But I do remember this from when I grew up here.

On late Monday afternoon, I when to the Walworth County dementia support group. When it can to my turn to talk about how things are going with my mom, one of the areas that I talked about was mom continuous stating that she want to go home. When I first saw this term being used, I thought that it was for people that are in the nursing homes, but this not the case. Even people, like my mom that are at home, they are still wanting to go home, and she states that she want to go be to her home town of Hebron. So, from time to time, I load her up, usually around 4:00 when this issue starts and last until bedtime, and take her back to Hebron. If becomes clear that it does not always work. There is more going on, since she keeps talking about people being around. So, it comes down to the fact that she is lonely and wants to be around people. In mom’s case, there was people around when she was growing up. From what I took away from the support group was that they need to be comforted.

This morning I travel about seven miles southwest of here on the other side of Whitewater and found a hiking trail in the kettle moraine area. Actually, it was the Ice Age trail that extends through the state, usually in the terminal moraine of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. This is the interesting part. Regarding my three lots in north central Wisconsin, I was hiking the same Ice Age trail in March in about four miles of my lots. It seems like I cannot get away from the terminal moraine of the Ice sheet. Here in Whitewater we are in the area of the Wisconsin Glacier and in north central Wisconsin I will be in the Chippewa Glacier.
